Keeping Watch: Day 3

TUESDAY, DEC 5

Lk 10:21-24

Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,
“I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows who the Son is except the Father,
and who the Father is except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

Turning to the disciples in private he said,
“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
For I say to you,
many prophets and kings desired to see what you see,
but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”

Grace:  I ask for the grace to know Jesus in a deeper way that I may abundantly love and follow him.

All good things descend from above… justice, goodness, pity, mercy, as from the sun descend the rays.” –Ignatius of Loyola

What a privilege to see hidden things!  To know beyond knowing who you are Jesus.  I am overwhelmed by your desire to reveal to me so much about yourself.  This is intimacy.  How can I hold, how can I respond to such generosity?

“I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it”.  This is my gift to you.  You worry that you are too small to receive this.  But listen, listen to what I say: “you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.”  “Being small, childlike, that is greatness.  That is openness to revelation, to good things that descend from above, to intimate knowledge of me.”

Open my eyes, make me childlike again. Jesus, reveal your Father to me.

For Reflection and Prayer:

Am I eager to receive an intimate knowledge of God?  Are there any qualms or questions in me?

Am I open to listening for God’s revelation in my life?

Am I open to God’s overwhelming generosity?

This hymn could help you reflect on today’s scripture: Open Our Eyes Lord
