Christian Marriage: Theological and Canonical Aspects

This Fall Semester, Oblate School of Theology will offer a course entitled “Christian Marriage: Theological and Canonical Aspects.” The course will be taught by Fr. Roger Keeler, former Executive Director of the Canon Law Society of America, and will be offered Wednesday evenings, 7:00 – 9:30 p.m., in the Whitley Theological Center. It will also be available online.

Following the outline of the book What Every Catholic Needs to Know about Marriage, Divorce, Nullity and Remarriage, the course will be an approachable exploration of marriage from both theological and canonical perspectives in such a way as to prepare fruitful pastoral ministry with those wishing to marry, with those planning their celebration of Christian marriage, with those who are married, and with those whose marriages have ended. These evenings will be useful for those engaged in pre-marriage preparation/formation; Pre-Cana; marriage liturgy and celebration; small Christian communities; RCIA; and care for the widowed, separated and divorced in their parish communities. No pre-requisite is needed.

Fr. Roger Keeler, JCD, is an assistant professor of Canon Law at Oblate School of Theology. Ordained to the ministerial priesthood for twenty-eight years; pastor for twenty-one years in both rural and urban settings; professor of Canon Law for five years (Newman Theological College, Edmonton); professor of systematics for four years (St. Joseph’s College at the University of Alberta, Edmonton). Fr. Keeler was elected Executive Director of the Canon Law Society of America in 2014 and served in that position until 2017.
