Sankofa Women’s Conference
The annual Sankofa Women’s Conference is about lifting up and empowering women and providing an opportunity for both healing and spiritual development. The conference brings together women of all ages, ethnicities and social classes to share their experiences, learn from one another and heal together. We bring world-class speakers and leading voices in their fields to shine a light on different aspects of women’s issues, share their own experiences and lead spiritually-driven healing for women in all stages of life.
Women’s Empowerment: Still I Rise
Having studied Africana religions throughout the United States, Nigeria, Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad, Brazil, Santo Domingo, England, and France, and recently transitioned to leadership at Colgate University, Dr. Hucks brings great commitment to an appreciation for comprehensive learning and inclusivity, envisioning partnerships on Africana related initiatives, and how such learnings empowers women. Her extensive travel, research, teaching, and writing have given her an expansive way of seeing who women are, who they were created to be, and how they navigate societies, where women are generally viewed as less than men. The workshop she leads grows out of her philosophy of making learning spaces “fluid and malleable space that places the scholarly world of Africana Studies in dialogue with a lived social, racial, and political world.” “Still I Rise,” engages individual and communal tools, rituals, and strategies of empowerment.
